AIMS AND OUTCOMES

The course covers the requirements for the design, testing, inspection and examination of offshore pedestal cranes and their associated components and accessories as per API Spec 2C 7th Edition 2012 and API Recommended Practice 2D 7th Edition 2014. This course should be undertaken by persons involved in the QA/QC process for pedestal crane installation (temporary or permanent) , Government agencies who inspect offshore cranes and overhead cranes, third party inspection (TPI) companies and any companies who wish for competent inspection staff.

  • Introduction into the use, frequency and Inspection of Cranes, Lifting and Hoisting Equipment
  • The responsibility of a Crane Inspector
  • Pre-use, monthly, quarterly and annual inspection criteria for Offshore API Spec Pedestal Cranes
  • The Law, Rules and Regulations
  • API 2C “Specification for Offshore Pedestal Mounted Cranes” Seventh Edition, October 2012
  • API RP 2D “Operation and Maintenance of Offshore Cranes” Seventh Edition, December 2014
  • Safe working practices and Identifying crane parts
  • King Post cranes and Overhead cranes inspection and what to look for on an offshore installation
  • Equipment and tools needed by the crane inspector
  • Examination of various offshore cranes (criteria)
  • Read load charts in preparation for a 4 yearly proof test as laid down in AP 2C & D
  • Studying the load radius of cranes, and their safe capabilities
  • Examination of the function of the load indicator and looking at all safety devices on cranes
  • Wire ropes, their safety factors of wire and their construction
  • Examination of wire rope and possible faults during the inspection
  • Prime movers and examination of the prime mover (electrical)
  • Inspection of the Prime mover (Diesel powered, including power pack) and shut down Devices
  • Engine house and associated equipment, Operator’s cabin and its fittings
  • Winches, crane functions & Inspecting
  • Examination of Boom, Main and aux hoists and associated equipment, Gantry, A-frame and fittings
  • Inspection of Main and Fly (Aux) block and possible faults
  • Examination of the Sheaves during inspection and their possible faults
  • Slew ring and its function including inspecting of slew area, slew ring deflection test and examination of slew gear teeth
  • Pedestal flanges & pedestal weld inspection, examination of bearings and electrical connectors
  • All Crane rigging and reeving
  • Frequency of inspection Load testing
  • Completing inspection reports & final theoretical examination paper

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

  • Understand the requirements of the applicable standards
  • Be able to ascertain if the offshore pedestal crane meets the requirements set out in the standards and those of the original equipment manufacturer
  • Carry out, with safety and competence, testing, inspection and examination of offshore pedestal cranes in accordance with API RP 2D and other relevant standards
  • Prepare reports in accordance with API RP 2D, LOLER 1998 and client requirements

CERTIFICATION

COURSE CODE: API-U QUALIFIED OFFSHORE CRANE INSPECTOR – API SPEC 2C & RP 2D

Students will receive an API – U certification issued by ATC Offshore upon course completion and passing exams. Theoretical test pass mark is set at 80%.
